三个案例分析展现2001到2014年显著升级的道路周围类人猿森林栖息地的过去和预期未来变化,还有一个与类人猿不相关的案例分析,介绍在秘鲁灵长类丰富的热带森林的一个地点。前三个地点(两个位于印度尼西亚苏门答腊北部,一个位于坦桑尼亚西部)是一共四个类人猿亚种的家园。

研究显示,为了减少道路对野生动物栖息地的负面影响,需要采取避让关键区域的规划、定期监测森林状态和采取其他自然保护行动。简便、强大的监测和测量森林丧失的方式,可以帮助资源管理者监测与合法道路相关的建设和土地使用变化,阻止在相邻的森林片区建造非法道路和清理。

此外,道路设计必须解决不能更改线路的道路带来的对自然区域的进入权问题。即便修建的道路不妨碍类人猿的移动,与此相关的之前无法进入的森林改作其他土地用途,会使居住在森里中的类人猿种群损失殆尽,坦桑尼亚西部黑猩猩种群的经历就是例证。
