Ch 2 : Les facteurs culturels du trafic de grands singes : les comprendre pour intervenir

Ce chapitre étudie les différentes solutions permettant aux acteurs de la conservation de comprendre et de contrer les diverses croyances et pratiques culturelles qui peuvent conduire à la chasse et à la capture des grands singes. Il replace le trafic dans son contexte local et communautaire et analyse les difficultés que pose l’évaluation de ses conséquences, particulièrement au vu du manque d’études scientifiques sur l’usage des grands singes en médecine traditionnelle et compte tenu de la diversité des attitudes locales face à ces primates et à la nature.

Il présente quatre études de cas qui montrent que la planification de la conservation se révélera sans doute davantage efficace lorsqu’elle tiendra compte des pratiques culturelles des communautés qui interagissent avec les grands singes et leurs habitats. Deux d’entre elles portent sur des communautés d’Afrique. L’une concerne la demande de parties de corps au Cameroun. L’autre traite de l’évolution des pratiques culturelles en Ouganda, lesquelles mettent de plus en plus en péril les grands singes malgré la protection officielle dont ils bénéficient. Les deux autres études de cas s’intéressent à la partie indonésienne de l’île de Bornéo et présentent les facteurs culturels de la chasse au Kalimantan. Elles révèlent que les méthodes utilisées en anthropologie peuvent aider à comprendre pourquoi dans les villages la population se livre à la chasse des orangs-outans et comment y remédier.
