Le chapitre 7 fait le bilan des habitats forestiers où vivent les grands singes en quantifiant les taux de destruction de la forêt tropicale grâce à la plateforme Global Forest Watch. Il s’agit de la première analyse approfondie de la disparition de la forêt qui a recours à des données spatialisées haute résolution sur l’évolution de la couverture forestière dans l’ensemble des aires de répartition des grands singes. S’appuyant sur des milliers d’images satellite, cette évaluation quantifie la régression annuelle des forêts dans les aires de répartition des grands singes entre 2000 et 2014 et donne une prévision de l’ampleur de la réduction future de l’habitat de chaque sous-espèce. Les résultats peuvent ainsi permettre de cerner leur survie à long terme.

Le chapitre 8 présente les résultats d’une étude de 56 refuges situés dans les pays où vivent les grands singes. Ces primates font l’expérience de la captivité dans des cadres variés : chez des particuliers, dans des attractions pour touristes, dans des zoos et des parcs à safari, et dans des centres spécialisés sans but lucratif, souvent appelés centres de sauvetage ou de réhabilitation ou encore refuges. Ce chapitre aborde l’histoire et le contexte de ces refuges ainsi que leurs possibilités d’action et leurs difficultés face aux menaces actuelles et à celles que l’on voit poindre.
