Ch 8 : Les grands singes en captivité : état des lieux

On peut trouver des refuges accueillant des grands singes dans la plupart des pays de l’aire de répartition en Asie et dans un peu moins de la moitié des pays africains concernés. La collaboration entre ces refuges a permis le partage d’informations et la formation de leur personnel, parfois avec des spécialistes de l’extérieur. La coopération a aussi joué un rôle dans l’évolution de ces centres en organisations dotées de vastes programmes recouvrant la protection, la conservation et le développement communautaire. Ils sont cependant en proie à d’énormes difficultés pour accueillir les nombreux grands singes sauvés du trafic de viande de brousse et d’animaux de compagnie, de la destruction de leur habitat et des conflits homme-animaux.

Avec une hausse des confiscations, les refuges risquent d’être surchargés et d’avoir de plus en plus de mal à faire face à la situation. Il est nécessaire que les refuges, les autorités, les donateurs, les ONG de conservation et les autres partenaires collaborent pour trouver des solutions durables afin de garantir des critères élevés d’accueil aux animaux confisqués tout en améliorant en parallèle la protection des grands singes sauvages et de leurs habitats.

La seconde partie de ce chapitre présente les dernières statistiques sur la population des grands singes captifs, que ce soit dans les pays de leur aire de répartition ou non, et brosse le panorama de la réglementation relative à ces animaux en captivité qui continue d’évoluer dans de multiples directions, ce qui influence les modalités de garde ou d’exploitation des grands singes en captivité.
