Dans l’ensemble des aires de répartition des grands singes, la forêt a perdu plus de 10 % de sa superficie entre 2001 et 2014, ce qui équivaut à 453 000 kilomètres carrés. Ce sont les gibbons et les orangs-outans qui ont vu leur habitat se rétrécir le plus, même si la déforestation avait, déjà avant 2000, amputé l’habitat des espèces dont l’aire de répartition est la plus restreinte : les gibbons sur le continent asiatique et les gorilles en Afrique centrale.

Cependant, des informations importantes sont présentées sur l’évolution de la destruction de la forêt en Afrique et en Asie et permettront d’éclairer les efforts de protection.

La possibilité offerte par Global Forest Watch de surveiller l’évolution de l’habitat des grands singes pratiquement en temps réel s’avère extrêmement intéressante pour les pays où vivent ces primates qui pourront notamment réaliser régulièrement des évaluations nationales de leurs habitats et détecter la disparition de la forêt à des échelles spatiales et temporelles pertinentes, ce qui peut faciliter la gestion et empêcher d’autres destructions. Et d’autres applications de ce nouvel outil, qui sont sur le point de sortir, sont prometteuses pour améliorer encore plus la protection des grands singes, car il sera notamment possible de réagir plus vite en cas de défrichement illégal.
