Kita hidup di tengah era ekspansi paling dramatis di sepanjang sejarah manusia, di mana investasi global di sektor transportasi, energi, air, dan infrastruktur lain diprediksi menjadi dua kali lipat pada tahun 2030.

Negara-negara daerah sebaran kera di Afrika khatulistiwa dan Asia Tenggara kini tengah mendapatkan tekanan tinggi, di mana banyak proyek jalan dan infrastruktur baru lainnya mulai masuk ke dalam habitat utuh atau perawan yang masih tersisa. Jalan membuat hutan menjadi terbuka akan sejumlah kegiatan manusia, seperti misalnya perburuan liar, pembalakan, pembakaran, penambangan liar, deforestasi, dan fragmentasi habitat, yang merupakan ancaman besar terhadap populasi dan spesies kera.

Upaya-upaya untuk membatasi dampak lingkungan, sosial, dan ekonomi negatif dari proyek-proyek infrastruktur masih jauh dari kata memuaskan; contohnya penilaian dampak lingkungan sering kali tidak memadai.

Sangat diperlukan upaya untuk memperkuat perencanaan pemanfaatan lahan di negara-negara daerah sebaran kera untuk meningkatkan pengelolaan kawasan lindung dan untuk merancang infrastruktur yang lebih berkelanjutan. Berbagai tren dalam jangka waktu dekat mengkhawatirkan, di mana Tiongkok memimpin skema infrastruktur di Asia, Afrika, dan Eropa dengan fokus pada industri ekstraktif seperti eksploitasi mineral, minyak, dan kayu. Kekhawatiran lain yang ada adalah investor swasta dan publik mendapatkan informasi yang kurang memadai mengenai dampak negatif potensial dari investasi di bidang infrastruktur.

Secara umum, pertumbuhan ekonomi dan jumlah penduduk yang sangat cepat di berbagai negara daerah sebaran kera beserta kelemahan-kelemahan yang ada dalam perencanaan lingkungan, penegakan peraturan dan tata kelola mengandung ancaman besar dan kuat terhadap kera beserta habitatnya.
