Adanya perdagangan kera dan satwa berstatus genting lainnya memicu kemunculan banyak kebijakan dan diskusi strategis antara negara asal dan negara yang mengajukan permintaan, donatur, dan organisasi konservasi, seperti yang tertuang dalam deklarasi pada berbagai konferensi internasional terbaru mengenai perdagangan ilegal satwa liar.

Berbagai musyawarah ini menghasilkan konsensus mengenai empat strategi kunci untuk mengatasi perdagangan ilegal satwa liar: mengurangi permintaan atas produk ilegal, mengembangkan kerangka hukum yang efektif, memperkuat penegakan hukum, dan mendorong pelibatan masyarakat. Tiga pendekatan terakhir ini sangat relevan untuk meningkatkan perlindungan terhadap kera dan membatasi perburuan liar dan perdagangan ilegal dari awal rantai pasok di negara-negara wilayah sebaran kera.
